Comprehensive landscaping and greening works have been completed in the historic Karpa Garden. The newly developed planting schemes enhance the garden’s biodiversity, creating an aesthetically pleasing, educational, and year-round engaging environment for residents and visitors alike.
Specimen trees and coniferous accents
The garden features carefully selected, well-established deciduous trees, conifers, and shrubs, bringing vertical structure and color diversity to the area:
Impressive deciduous trees: The landscape is enhanced by Red Maple (Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’), Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba), Japanese Flowering Cherry (Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’), Turkish Hazel (Corylus colurna), and Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra).
Resilient conifers and shrubs: Large-format Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra subsp. nigra), Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus), and Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) have been successfully established.
Elegant rhododendrons: Evergreen rhododendrons (‘Manderly’, ‘Purpureum Grandiflorum’, ‘Vulcan’) were planted in shaded and semi-shaded areas, providing vibrant blooms throughout spring and early summer.
A layered carpet of perennials, hostas, and spring bulbs
The garden’s understory features multi-layered, low-maintenance perennial beds that showcase changing textures and tones throughout the seasons:
Spring bloom display: Over 1100 crocus bulbs (‘Golden Yellow’, ‘Flower Record’, ‘Grand Maitre’, ‘Pickwick’, ‘Vanguard’) were planted to burst into rich color in early spring.
Shade and semi-shade plant compositions: The beds thrive with a wide variety of hostas (‘Blue Mouse Ears’, ‘Autumn Frost’, ‘Whirlwind’, ‘First Frost’, ‘Minuteman’), along with Lily of the Valley, variegated lungwort, and spring sedge (Carex caryophyllea ‘The Beatles’).
Sustainable installation and plant care
Soil enrichment: All plant beds were soil-conditioned with specialized pH-tailored substrate, rich topsoil, organic fertilizer, and perlite for optimal moisture retention.
Tree stabilization and protection: Young specimen trees were anchored to pressure-treated wooden stakes using flexible ties and wrapped in natural bamboo/reed matting to protect trunks from sunscald.
Mulching: Tree and plant bases received a 5 cm layer of premium pine bark mulch to retain soil moisture and maintain a clean, polished appearance.
We invite the residents of Bauska and guests of the city to visit the newly landscaped Karpa Garden to enjoy the spring blooms, natural shade, and the beauty of this revitalized historic park!
